Golf's Bieniek named Academic All-MAC
May 7, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- The accolades continue for Western Michigan University's
Erica Bieniek, an April business graduate and four-year member
of the varsity golf team.
With her selection to the All-Mid-American Conference First
Team in April, Bieniek became the first Bronco golfer named to
an All-MAC squad in the five-year history of varsity women's
golf at WMU. Now, the Scottville, Mich., native has added Academic
All-MAC team selection to her list of honors. She also owns virtually
every team record for the Broncos. The five-member academic all-conference
squad also included two student-athletes each from Bowling Green
and Kent State.
An accounting major from Scottville, Mich., Bieniek was graduated
with a bachelor of business administration degree and a 3.27
cumulative grade-point average April 26, but was unable to attend
her commencement ceremony, because she was representing WMU at
the MAC Championships that weekend in Ohio. To celebrate her
graduation, Bieniek shot a one-under-par 71 that day, which tied
for the lowest round of the day.
Academic all-conference honors are given to student-athletes
who excel in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete
must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated
in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
First-year students and junior college transfers in their first
year of residence are not eligible for the award.
