May 9, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- Dr. Gregory Veeck, associate professor of geography
at Western Michigan University, has been awarded the Sasakawa
Fellowship by the American Association of State Colleges and
Universities.
The fellowship will support his participation in the National
Faculty Development Institute on Incorporating Japanese Studies
into the Undergraduate Curriculum, which will be held June 2-27
at San Diego State University.
Veeck is currently conducting research with apple farmers
in Michigan, China and Japan, which is examining conditions for
small farmers in the three countries since the formation of the
World Trade Organization. The fellowship will help him with this
research in understanding Japan and will support his work in
the classroom, where he teaches an undergraduate class on China,
