
Trustees approve retirements
March 31, 2003
KALAMAZOO -- The retirements of nine faculty and six staff
members were approved by the Western Michigan University Board
of Trustees at its March 28 meeting. Trustees also accepted the
resignations of three faculty members.
All of the faculty members who are retiring are doing so with
emeriti status. Their names, years of continuous service and
effective dates of retirement are: Wendy L. Cornish, professor
of dance, 37 years, effective Dec. 31, 2003; Dr. Joseph S. Ellin,
professor of philosophy, 41 years, effective Dec. 31, 2003; Dr.
William B. Harrison III, professor of geosciences, 30 1/2 years,
effective Dec. 8, 2003; Pamela Keesler, faculty specialist I
in the Career English Language Center for International Students,
27 years, effective Aug. 30, 2002 (correction to previously announced
emeriti status); Dr. Lorna Kierepka, faculty specialist II of
industrial and manufacturing engineering , 10 years, effective
Aug. 31, 2003 (correction to previously announced emeriti status);
Paul Mergen, professor of art, 38 1/2 years, effective Dec. 31,
2003; Dr. Robert E. Shamu, professor of physics, 41 years, effective
April 30, 2008; Lovette Teichert, master faculty specialist in
the Career English Language Center for International Students,
27 years, effective Aug. 21, 2003; and Dr. Richard A. Wright,
professor of philosophy and dean of the College of Aviation,
10 years, effective Feb. 21 2003.
The staff members retiring are: Betty L. Benner, office coordinator
for Transportation Services, 15 1/2 years, effective June 30,
2003; Mary E. Birch, groundskeeper I, Physical Plant-Landscape
Services, 23 years, effective Jan. 29, 2003; Patricia M. Guenther,
assistant director of the Office of Business Development Services,
20 years, effective May 18, 2003; Robert A. Higgins, strip/camera
operator/platemaker in Auxiliary Enterprises, 34 1/2 years, effective
June 20, 2003; Richard M. Hoff, bindery operator, Auxiliary Enterprises,
35 years, effective June 20, 2003; and Karen A. Page, custodian,
Residence Life, 25 1/2 years, effective May 31, 2003.
The faculty members resigning are: Dr. Insoo Hyun, assistant
professor of philosophy, effective Aug. 3, 2003; Todd Neal, assistant
professor of theatre, effective Jan. 9, 2003; and Dr. Mark S.
Richardson, associate professor of English, effective Aug. 15,
2003.
