
Grad student receives Harik economics award

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University graduate student
Zijian Huang of Richmond Hill, Ont., has been awarded with the
Department of Economics' Elias Harik Award.
The Elias Harik Award recognizes the academic excellence displayed
by each of its recipients. It was established more than 10 years
ago by two WMU faculty members, Dr. Salim Harik, associate professor
emeritus of economics, and Dr. Bassam Harik, associate professor
and chairperson of the Department of Economics, as a memorial
to their father. The award, which is presented each fall and
winter semester to an outstanding new graduate student in economics,
includes a $100 honorarium.
Huang hopes to obtain a position in China's banking and financial
industry or to work for the Canadian government after completing
his graduate studies at WMU. He is the son of Shuxuan Huang and
Jinfeng Chen, both of Changsha, Hunan, China.
