Trustees announce meeting dates, approve revised bylaws
Dec. 16, 2002
KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees
has approved board meetings for the next calendar year. Acting
at its Dec. 13 meeting, trustees scheduled meetings for 2003
on Jan. 24, March 14, May 9, July 18, Sept. 12 and Dec. 12. All
meetings are on Fridays and usually take place in the Connable
Board Room in the Bernhard Center.
In other action, the trustees approved a set of revised bylaws
to govern the board's operations. Changes incorporated in the
revised bylaws reflect changes in state law. The changes make
the bylaws consistent with changes in the language of the Michigan
constitution and in keeping with recent decisions by the Michigan
Supreme Court.
The revisions allow changes that include: establishing the
concept of both formal board sessions that will include active
public engagement and for which notice will be given to the press;
establishing the concept of informal board sessions in which
board members consult with each other; introducing board conference
call meetings as part of the board protocol, allowing formal
sessions to be conducted using electronic means; and allowing
the board to establish and disband committees as needed without
revising the bylaws each time such a need is identified.
