
Retirements of three faculty, eight staff members announced

KALAMAZOO -- The retirements of three faculty members and
eight staff members were approved by the Western Michigan University
Board of Trustees at its Dec. 13 meeting. Trustees also accepted
the resignations of four faculty members.
Two of the faculty members who are retiring are doing so with
emeriti status. Their names, years of continuous service and
effective dates of retirement are: Dr. Suzanne Davis, assistant
professor of teaching, learning and leadership, 13 1/2 years,
effective April 26, 2003, and Dr. John L. Michael, professor
of psychology, 35 1/2 years, effective April 26, 2003. The third
retiring faculty member is Lorna K. Kierepka, faculty specialist
II, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, 10
years, effective Aug. 31, 2003.
The staff members retiring are: Berwin Bergman, carpet/tile
layer, Physical Plant-maintenance services, 16 years, effective
Dec. 31, 2002; Robert G. Bowsher Jr., custodian, Physical Plant-building,
custodial and support services, 31 1/2 years, effective Dec.
31, 2002; Judy K. Dunn, athletic equipment handler, University
Recreation, 27 1/2 years, effective July 31, 2002; Alvera Fredericks,
custodian, Residence Life, 13 years, effective Dec. 31, 2002;
Mary A. Gardner, custodian, Physical Plant-building, custodial
and support services, 18 years, effective Dec. 31, 2002; Edward
L. Hixson, painter, Physical Plant-maintenance services, 32 1/2
years, effective Feb. 28, 2003; Richard A. Soule, painter, Physical
Plant-maintenance services, 31 1/2 years, effective Jan. 31,
2003; and Ruth E. Sparks, custodian, Residence Life, 22 1/2 years,
effective Dec. 31, 2002.
The faculty members resigning are: Dr. Jaclyn Maxwell, assistant
professor of comparative religion, effective Aug. 4, 2002; Dr.
Andrew L. Purvis, assistant professor of manufacturing engineering,
effective Aug. 5, 2002; Dr. Tal L. Simmons, associate professor
of anthropology, effective Aug. 3, 2003; and Dr. Tianyou Wang,
associate professor of educational studies, effective Dec. 13,
2002.
