
Advisor offers suggestions on tax strategies for businesses

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University and the Battle Creek
Area Chamber of Commerce are joining forces for a program Monday,
Dec. 9, when a local investment expert will advise small business
owners on tax law and strategy.
Timothy A. Shivley of Shivley & Associates will present
"Tax Strategies for Small Businesses and Their Owners"
from 6 to 8 p.m. at WMU-Battle Creek's Kendall Center, 50 West
Jackson. Part of a monthly series co-sponsored by the University's
Women's Business Development Center and the chamber, the program
is free and open to the public.

In his talk, Shivley will discuss whether entrepreneurs should
establish their businesses as sole proprietorships, partnerships
or corporations; how much businesses are taxed; which items fall
under the business's taxes and which under the owner's; strategies
for paying less taxes; and tax traps to avoid.
Shivley is president and owner of Shivley & Associates,
an accounting firm located in Commerce Pointe in downtown Battle
Creek. The firm provides auditing, accounting, business advisory
and tax services to individuals, businesses and not-for-profit
organizations. He consults frequently with entrepreneurs and
people who are considering starting up a business.
