Campus Classic volunteers have fun without the run

Oct. 5, 2002

KALAMAZOO -- The 2002 Homecoming Campus Classic offers fun for more than just the athletic--volunteers can be part of the festivities without having to lift a sneaker.

The 2002 Homecoming Campus Classic, to be held at Western Michigan University Saturday, Oct. 12, will feature a 5K race, 5K walk, 1K kids' fun run and a 1K fun walk. Nearly 200 volunteers are needed to help with the race, which last year attracted more than 1,400 participants.

"Volunteering to help with the race is wonderful for people who want to be in on the fun of Homecoming," says Marie Lee, one of the volunteer coordinators for the race. "We welcome groups and families, in addition to individual volunteers."

Volunteers will receive a free long-sleeve race T-shirt, continental breakfast before the race, a free ticket to the after-race awards brunch, a souvenir thermal mug and the opportunity to win door prizes, including two round trip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States donated by AAA Travel.

Among the positions volunteers are needed to fill are course marshals, finish line reporters, race registration assistants and race/brunch set up workers. While most volunteers are needed from 7 a.m. until the conclusion of the race at approximately 11 a.m., race registration volunteers are needed beginning at 6:30 a.m. and must attend a pre-race training session in the week before the event.

It is requested that volunteers be 15 years or older. However, families with younger children are welcome if an adult is present.

Information about volunteering, including descriptions of the available volunteer jobs, is available on the race's Web site at <www/wmich/edu/race>.

Interested persons can register to volunteer for the 2002 Campus Classic in two ways: by calling the Office of University Relations at (269) 387-8400 or they can register online at <www/wmich/edu/race>.
