Academic calendar changes put end to campus 'winter'
July 15, 2002
KALAMAZOO -- The term "winter semester" is about
to become history at Western Michigan University.
That's just one of the results of changes to the University's
academic calendar that have been agreed upon by the University
and WMU's chapter of the AAUP during current contract negotiations.
Campus community members may begin using the new calendar immediately,
according to Roberta Allen, associate vice president for academic
affairs.
Calendar changes
The name of the second semester will be "spring semester"
instead of "winter semester."
The names of "spring session" and "summer session"
will change to Summer I Session and Summer II Session, respectively.
Summer II Session will begin the day after the Summer I Session
ends, instead of on the same day as the end of the first session.
Spirit Day will move from fall semester to the last Friday
before spring semester recess, typically the first week in March.
Beginning in 2003, fall semester will begin in late August.
The calendar changes must still be approved in an agreement
ratification vote by the local AAUP membership. The staff holiday
calendar remains unchanged.
