Collum and Reynolds earn All-MAC honors
March 13, 2002
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University men's basketball
players Steve Reynolds and Robby Collum earned All-Mid-American
conference honors for their play in 2001-02. "We are obviously
extremely excited for both players, who are deserving of the
honor," said head coach Robert McCullum. "The recognition
is another sign of growth in our program.
"We were hopeful that Robby would receive enough votes
to make the second team with the year that he had, but the other
players selected are a testament to the high level of guard play
throughout the league."
Reynolds, a senior forward, was one of five players named
to the All-MAC Second Team. The South Bend, Ind., native concluded
the regular season as the league's ninth-leading scorer with
a season average of 16.9 points per game, which also led the
team. He reached the 30-point barrier on four occasions this
season, an accomplishment only MAC Player of the Year Keith McLeod
managed more times. Those performances included a career-high
35 points at Kent State, a game in which he tied the school record
for 3-point field goals made with eight.
Collum improved on all of his statistical numbers in his second
season at WMU and as a result was tabbed to the All-MAC Honorable
Mention squad. The junior guard is ranked among the league leaders
in six different categories and the only student-athlete in the
top three in four areas. He finished second on the team and 15th
in the MAC in scoring at 15.4 points per game. Collum set the
school record for steals in a season with 72 and concluded the
year as the conference leader in free throw percentage (.864)
and steals per game (2.40).
McCullum finished second in the coach-of-the-year voting,
conducted by the MAC News Media Association. First-year head
coach Stan Heath of Kent State, who guided last season's first
place finishing team to another top finish, received 43 votes.
McCullum was second with 10 votes after guiding his team to 10
wins more than the previous season and one of the nation's top
turnarounds.
