March 3, 2002

KALAMAZOO -- WMU's Bronco hockey team will host Ohio State University in a best-of-three games CCHA First Round Playoff series Friday, Saturday and Sunday, if necessary, March 8-10, at Lawson Ice Arena. This is the first playoff series at Lawson since 1996.

The Broncos are seeded sixth in the 12-team Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament and ranked No. 12 in the nation. WMU finished the regular season 19-13-4 in all contests and 13-12-3 in the CCHA.

Western Michigan closed its regular season with losses Friday, 4-2 in Ann Arbor, and Saturday, 6-2 in Kalamazoo, to No. 7-ranked Michigan. By virtue of the weekend sweep, Michigan claimed the CCHA regular season title. Saturday night's contest was played before a sellout crowd of 4,757 at Lawson.

In Saturday's contest, WMU built a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by Lucas Drake and
Dana Lattery. Michigan responded with five unanswered goals, including four in the third period. The Broncos were outshot on the evening, 28-15, and went 0-for-5 on the power play while UM scored three times on the man advantage.
