Honors students gives Graduating Presentation in Dance
March 26, 2002
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University senior Kristen Legg
will present her Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduating Presentation
in Dance in solo performances April 6 and 7.
Performances begin at 2 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, and
at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, in Dance Studio B, third floor,
Dalton Center. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Doors
open one half-hour prior to each performance.
Solo presentations for graduating seniors are rare. More typically,
graduating seniors combine their efforts in groups of two or
three students.
Legg has choreographed three new group works for her Graduating
Presentation in Dance. She has
created a piece using excerpts from Brahms' String Sextet No.
1 in B Flat Major, which gives an elegant portrayal of the joy
of dancing. The movement works to show the contrast between soft
spirals and jagged lines. Legg has also created a study combining
dance and humor. For this piece, Legg developed the choreography
with the help of her dancers. For her third piece, Legg collaborated
with WMU jazz piano major Dan Kramlich to create a satiric number
titled, "Pants: The Musical."
Legg is also including works by two of her mentors, department
chair Nina Nelson and former co-worker, Erika Randall. Nelson
has created a solo for Legg using a bowling ball and the music
of Elvis Presley. Randall, a graduate student at Ohio State University,
has created "Wallflower's Last Call" for Legg. Randall
is also performing in her work, "Humiliation, Loneliness,
and Delilah" with Legg.
The April 6-7 concerts are the culmination of Legg's Bachelor
of Fine Arts Degree in Dance and also serve as her thesis for
the Lee Honors College. She has received funding from both the
Lee Honors College and the Undergraduate Entrepreneurial Program
through the College of Fine Arts.
