
Compania Espanola at WMU for one performance

KALAMAZOO -- As an heir to the great masters who is, at the
same time, an artist endowed with a highly individual talent
and artistic temperament, Antonio Marquez creates a spectacle
where colors, music and choreography create a stirring journey
into the heart of Spanish culture and dancing. The technical
mastery of Compania Espanola de Antonio Marquez will grace the
Miller Auditorium stage for one performance only on Saturday,
Feb. 9, at 8 p.m.

Born in Seville in 1963, Antonio Marquez began to study dance
at age 12 and completed his training with the Ballet National
de Espana. Distinguishing himself by his own technique and talent,
he became a member of the Spanish Company in 1982. This was the
beginning of intense activity and a prestigious career that led
him to appear throughout the world as the principal performer
of the Spanish Company's tours and at numerous festivals. He
has worked with the Ballet Espanol de Madrid, Ballet Region de
Murcia, and performed guest roles that were created specifically
for him before starting his own dance company, Companía
Espanola de Antonio Marquez.
Considered one of the greatest Flamenco dancers, Marquez brings
an explosion of color, music and the traditional Spanish culture
dance style to the stage. Spectators will be stirred by the passion,
emotion, and joy Marquez expresses through his powerful arm movements,
seductive poses, and polished posture.
Marquez has performed before international audiences and for
dignitaries, including King Juan Carlos of Spain.
