Communications, salon and Subway leases approved
July 6, 2001
KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's Board of Trustees
authorized three leases of University property at its July 6
meeting.
Trustees authorized University officials to execute documents
with these people and organizations for leases at the following
locations:
Cricket Communication Inc., space on the University's
communications tower. The University owns a communications tower
adjacent to the Campus Services Building, just off Oliver Street.
In 1999, the board approved a resolution allowing the administration
to enter into five long-term leases, the last of which will soon
be in place. A sixth agreement, approved at the July 6 meeting,
leases space to Cricket Communications Inc. at a much lower level
on the tower, and with smaller and lighter equipment. The 10-year
lease with the option of two, five-year extensions completes
the tower's capacity.
Jessica Bates, Larry Williams, and Andrew Brown, property
at 916 Buckhout. The University owns the Howard Street Plaza,
located at 907 Howard Street, and a small nearby barber shop,
located at 916 Buckhout. Trustees approved the lease of the barbershop
to the three individuals listed above, for two years at a monthly
rate of $750. The trio intends to begin offering hair styling
services in the facility this fall.
Subway Real Estate Corp., a retail site in Bronco Mall.
Since 1988, the Bronco Mall has operated in the lower level of
the Bernhard Center. A site has been vacant since September 2000,
and trustees authorized officials to execute a two-year lease
for that location to Subway Real Estate Corp., where the University
would place a Subway Sandwich Shop. The agreement includes the
option of extending for up to eight additional one-year periods.
Subway was chosen for the Bronco Mall as a result of a student
survey.
