Two Broncos are likely picks in NHL draft
June 22, 2001
KALAMAZOO -- The 2001 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft
may very well have a Bronco theme this weekend (June 23-24) in
Sunrise, Fla.
A pair of WMU sophomores, defenseman Mike Jarmuth (Monkton,
Ont.) and right wing Jeff Campbell (Hensall, Ont.) are middle
round projections according to NHL Central Scouting, which provides
evaluation services to NHL clubs. In the final Central Scouting
report of North American talent, Jarmuth was rated as a third
round draft pick and Campbell as a fifth round selection.
"I think both have a realistic opportunity to get drafted
in the mid-to-late rounds," said WMU Head Coach Jim Culhane.
"They seem to be on the radar screen judging by the number
of calls we've received from NHL clubs requesting information.
It's every boy's dream to get drafted and college hockey has
become part of the process.
Should Jarmuth or Campbell be selected this weekend, both
would likely stay on with the Broncos since draft rights are
protected for two years.
Jarmuth was the seventh-leading scoring defenseman in the
Central Collegiate Hockey Association last year, earning honorable
mention on the CCHA All-Rookie team. The 5-11, 181-pound blueliner
compiled 21 points (3-18) in 33 games, finishing fifth in WMU
scoring.
Campbell led NCAA freshmen in scoring, averaging 1.43 points
per game. He finished second nationally in power play goals (14),
fifth in goals (0.780 gpg) and 14th in points (1.43 ppg). His
26 goals were the fourth-most ever by a WMU freshman. The 5-9,
170-pound forward totaled 53 points (26-27) in 37 games and set
a school record with goals in nine straight games.
The 38th NHL Entry Draft is being held at the National Car
Rental Center home of the Florida Panthers. Rounds 1 through
3 take place Saturday and rounds 4 through 9 on Sunday. ESPN2
will carry the draft live with complete results posted on NHL.com.
