Jon Powell named to All-MAC team
March 8, 2001
KALAMAZOO -- WMU men's basketball forward Jon Powell has been
named to the 2000-01 All-Mid-American Conference Honorable Mention
Team. Powell, a senior, was the lone Bronco named to the first,
second or honorable mention squads.
"We are extremely happy for Jon and feel he is very deserving
of the recognition," head coach
Robert McCullum said. "We were hoping he would be selected
for the first or second team, which
he most certainly earned with his play this season."
One of only three players in the MAC to reach double figures
in every game, the Dayton, Ohio,
native was among the league leaders in several categories. In
all games (28), he concluded the year
first in 3-pointers per game (2.29), fourth in field goal percentage
(.502), fifth in 3-point field goal
percentage (.430), 10th in scoring (15.9), 12th in steals (1.40)
and 14th in free throw percentage
(.772).
Powell stepped up his production in conference play, finishing
among the league's top-five in four
different individual categories. He was first in 3-pointers per
game (2.71), fourth in 3-point field
goal percentage (.447), fourth in scoring (18.2) and fifth in
field goal percentage (.513).
A junior college transfer who joined the program for the 1999-2000
campaign, Powell led the
Broncos in several statistical categories this season. He finished
the year tops on the squad in
scoring (15.9), field goal percentage (.502) and free throw percentage
(.772). He was also second
on the team in steals (35).
Western Michigan returns 10 letterwinners and four starters
for the upcoming 2001-02 season,
losing only the program's lone senior in Powell.
