Hockey Broncos sweep weekend series
Nov. 4, 2000
KALAMAZOO -- WMU's hockey team improved to 6-1-1 with back-to-back
victories over non-conference opponent Dartmouth on Friday and
Saturday (Nov. 3-4) at Lawson Ice Arena.
The Broncos, who swept Lake Superior State the previous weekend,
enjoyed consecutive two-win weekends for the first time since
January 1997. WMU also won its fifth straight match for the first
time since November 1995. The only loss for the Broncos this
season was a 6-5 non-conference decision in overtime.
In Friday's 5-0 win over Dartmouth,
goalie Jeff Reynaert carded the first shutout of his collegiate
career, and senior Steve Rymsha scored his 8th, 9th and 10th
goals of the season for the hat trick.
On Saturday, Dartmouth outshot the Broncos, 40-27, but Reynaert
made 36 saves, and Western Michigan found the back of the net
five times for a 5-4 victory. A Lawson Arena crowd of 2,046 watched
the Broncos earn their sixth win of the season and fifth in a
row.
Senior David Gove scored his team-leading 11th goal of the
season. Freshman Jeff Campbell, who also scored on Friday night,
got his 7th goal in Saturday's match. Sophomore Brent Rumble
added a goal (his 3rd of the season), and freshman Dana Lattery
got his 3rd and 4th lamp-lighters as a Bronco, including the
game-winner.
Western Michigan remains near the top of the Central Collegiate
Hockey Association standings with seven points on a league record
of 3-0-1. The Broncos do not return to CCHA action until Nov.
17, when they travel to Michigan State.
WMU is at non-conference opponent Niagara for a pair matches
on Nov. 10 and 11. The next home matches for the hockey team
will be Thanksgiving weekend, when they host CCHA foe Ferris
State on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24-25.
