Hockey Broncos open with win and tie
Oct. 15, 2000
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- WMU's hockey team claimed three of four
possible points over the weekend at Alaska-Fairbanks, with a
4-4 tie on Friday (Oct. 13) and an 8-5 victory on Saturday (Oct.
14). The contests were the first of the 2000-01 season for Western
Michigan.
The three-point weekend moved WMU (1-0-1 overall, 1-0-1 CCHA)
into first place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association
on a light opening weekend of league play.
In Saturday's victory, left wing Steve Rymsha recorded his
first career hat trick. Right wing Dave Gove and center Mike
Bishai picked up where they left off last season as the top two
returning scorers in CCHA contests. Gove scored two goals for
the second night in a row. Bishai had four assists Saturday night
to add to his two on Friday.
In addition to Gove, Ryan Crane and Bishai score for the Broncos
in Friday's tie. Rymsha and Gove combined for five of WMU's eight
goal Saturday night. The other three were scored by Jeff Campbell,
Dana Lattery and Austin Miller. Campbell and Lattery are both
first-year players.
The eight Bronco goals Saturday night were the most since
an 8-1 win on Feb. 28, 1998, also at Alaska-Fairbanks.
Jeff Reyneart was in goal for Western Michigan both nights
and recorded 22 and 32 saves, respectively.
WMU opens on its home ice with a pair of games during WMU
Homecoming weekend, Oct. 20-21, versus non-conference opponent
Alabama-Huntsville. Faceoff for both matches is 7 p.m. at Lawson
Arena.
