
Volleyball Broncos win 3-1 at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- WMU's volleyball team extended its MAC
winning streak to five with a 3-1 victory at Marshall University
on Friday night (Oct. 13). The Broncos improved to 11-5 for the
season and 6-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Broncos continue their two-match road trip on Saturday
when they travel to Athens, Ohio, for a key match with the Ohio
University Bobcats. On Friday night, the Bobcats, 7-1 MAC, suffered
their first conference loss of the season. Ball State, the lone
remaining undefeated team in the MAC, downed Ohio, 3-1 (10-15,
15-13, 15-13, 15-4), at Athens.
The Broncos defeated Marshall 15-4, 15-10, 7-15, 15-10, for
their fifth straight MAC victory. Marshall remains winless (0-7)
in conference competition.
Senior outside hitter Monyka Paul led the Broncos with 15
kills and a team-high eight digs. She also had five block assists
in the win at Marshall.
Junior middle blocker Zakiya Pope had 14 kills, seven digs,
and a team-leading six blocks. Senior Alberta Griffin, an outside
hitter, was the only other Bronco with double-figure kills. She
had 10.
Making her first collegiate start, Amanda Fry had six kills
and five blocks. Both are career highs for the sophomore middle
blocker from Saginaw, Mich., who had a .364 hitting percentage
for the match.
Sophomore setter Ashley Ritter assisted her teammates 41 times.
Ritter and classmate Cindy Kizer both added seven digs to the
Bronco defensive effort.
Western Michigan returns to Kalamazoo for WMU Homecoming weekend.
The Broncos host Toledo on Friday, Oct. 20, in a 7 p.m. match
at University Arena. On Saturday, Oct. 21, the Broncos celebrate
Volleyball Alumnae Night during a 5:30 p.m. match with Akron.
