Campus Classic draws more than 1,300 participants

KALAMAZOO -- More than 1,300 runners and walkers from West Michigan and states around the nation took part Oct. 21 in Western Michigan University's second annual Campus Classic -- a Homecoming event that features a 5K run and walk and a 1K kids' fun run and walk.

Kalamazoo area runners numbered among this year's big winners, turning in the best overall times for men and women in the 5K run. Three Portage North Middle School teams swept the student team division in the 5K, and the non-student winning team was made up of runners representing Kalamazoo television station WWMT. The top winners and their times were:

Men's Overall Winner -- Kraig Schmottlach, Kalamazoo (15:16).

Women's Overall Winner -- Jessi Davis, Kalamazoo (16:46).

Student Team Winners -- The North 6 team runners from Portage (Mich.) North Middle School, runners Josh Kieser (19:37), Nicholas Olson (19:43) and Andrew Novaria(24:06).

Non-student Team Winners -- WWMT, Kalamazoo, runners Kelcey Carlson (20:56), M. Longhorn (20:56), Pam Steffey (27:03) and David Lawson (26:10).
