
Accounting experts advise small business owners

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- Two accounting experts will discuss
how a small business should set up its financial records during
a Western Michigan University presentation Monday, Oct. 9, in
Battle Creek.
Kathleen Gleaves and Jerri Smith, owners of Pyramid Services
Company, will present "Setting Up the Books for a Small
Business" from 6 to 8 p.m. at WMU's Kendall Center, 50 West
Jackson. The second program in a monthly series co-sponsored
by the Southwestern Michigan Urban League, the talk is free and
open to the public.
Designed for new business owners, the session will cover the
correct way to keep financial records. Gleaves and Smith will
touch on such topics as which records to keep, opening a business
bank account and preparing for tax reports.
Gleaves and Smith's business, Pyramid Services Company, provides
tax preparation, record keeping, financial planning and accounting
services. Gleaves is an accountant and holds a master's degree
in accounting from WMU's Haworth College of Business. Smith has
a decade of experience in tax preparation.
WMU's Haworth College of Business established the Women's
Business Development Center in 1999 to offer support to female
professionals and entrepreneurs through training, group and individual
problem-solving consultation, current business information and
networking opportunities.
