
Volleyball Broncos fall at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Defending MAC champion Ball State defeated
the WMU volleyball team, 15-7, 15-10, 15-10, in Muncie on Saturday
night (Sept. 23). WMU fell to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-American
Conference.
Western Michigan swept Ball State, 3-0, in Kalamazoo in 1999,
but the Broncos have now lost their past eight matches versus
the Cardinals in Muncie. The last time a WMU volleyball team
defeated Ball State on its home court was Nov. 15, 1991.
The two teams meet again when the Broncos host Ball State
on Friday, Nov. 17, in the final weekend of the regular season.
In Saturday's loss, junior middle blocker Zakiya Pope had
12 kills, a .450 hitting percentage and a match-high six blocks.
She also contributed eight digs.
Outside hitter M'Miya McQuirter had 13 kills. Seniors Monyka
Paul and Alberta Griffin each had eight kills. Paul and Griffin
also had 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Senior setter Jen Nowak
started the match. She had 27 assists. Sophomore Ashley Ritter
had 17 assists in relief of Nowak.
On Friday night (Sept. 22), the Broncos opened their MAC schedule
with an impressive 3-0 win at Miami University. [Click

The Broncos play their first four MAC matches of the season
on the road. WMU travels to Akron on Friday, Sept. 29, for a
7:30 p.m. match and to Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 30,
for a match that begins at 7 p.m.
Western Michigan returns to University Arena for its MAC home
opener versus Bowling Green on Friday, Oct. 6. The Broncos also
host Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 7. Game time for both home
matches is 7 p.m.
