Broncos finish high in MAC all-sports standings

June 9, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- The Mid-American Conference announced its all-sports awards this week, and both the Western Michigan University men and women finished high in the standings. The Broncos finished third in the women's all-sports standings and fifth in the men's. The men missed a top three finish in the 13-team league by just two points.

Second-place conference finishes in football, tennis, and track and field helped the Bronco men to a 54.5 point total. The women won the MAC championship in tennis and finished second in volleyball and basketball on their way to 60.5 points in the all-sports standings.

Scores are calculated by taking the six-highest finishes for each school among the 11 men's and 12 women's sports sponsored by the MAC. The men's totals must include football, basketball, and baseball. The women's totals must include basketball, volleyball, and softball.

The Reese Trophy for men's sports has been awarded every year since 1958. WMU has won the trophy three times, most recently in 1998, and has finished second in the standings five times. Kent State's men won this year's Reece Trophy with first-place finishes in three sports (baseball, outdoor track and field and golf) and two second-place finishes.

Women's sports have been recognized since 1983 with the Jacoby Trophy. Western's women won four of the first five Jacoby Trophies, and finished second in 1989 and 1995. Ball State's women won the 2000 Jacoby Trophy with first-place finishes in volleyball and outdoor track and field. The Cardinals split a first-place finish with Kent in field hockey.
