KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University senior Matt Vriesenga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 37th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday (June 6).
Vriesenga, a right-handed pitcher for the Broncos, was 3-6 on the year. He was second on the team with a 3.16 ERA and led Western Michigan in appearances (22). Vriesenga held opposing hitters to a .244 batting average, the lowest average among Bronco hurlers. He was also ranked among NCAA and Mid-American Conference ERA leaders during the 2000 season. The senior fanned 44 batters in 51-1/3 innings while issuing just 10 walks. Vriesenga started five games, going the distance in two of those contests.
The Cardinals have minor league affiliates in Memphis, Tenn., (Class AAA - Pacific Coast League); Little Rock, Ark., (Class AA - Texas League); Potomac, Va., (Class A - Carolina League); Peoria, Ill., (Class A - Midwest League), Augusta, N.J., (Class A - New York-Penn League), and Johnson City, Tenn., (Rookie - Appalachian League).
Western Michigan was 26-27 overall, 10-18 in Mid-American Conference play during the 2000 season.
