Trustees approve faculty and staff retirements

June 30, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- The retirements of 12 faculty members and nine staff members were approved by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees at its June 23 meeting. Trustees also accepted the resignations of seven faculty members.

All of the faculty members who are retiring are doing so with emeriti status. Their names, years of continuous service and effective dates of retirement are: Dr. Norman E. Carlson, associate professor of English, 38 years, effective April 30, 2001; Dr. Phillip P. Caruso, associate professor of economics, 34 years, effective April 30, 2001; Joe R. Chapel, associate professor of teaching, learning and leadership, 34 years, effective June 11, 2000; Dr. David J. Cowden, assistant professor of teaching, learning and leadership, 31-1/2 years, effective Dec. 30, 2000; Dr. Kenneth A. Dahlberg, professor of political science, 35 years, effective April 30, 2001; Dr. Salim E. Harik, associate professor of economics, 25 years, effective April 30, 2001; George W. Hobbs, associate professor of health, physical education and recreation, 35-1/2 years, effective Dec. 31, 2000; Dr. James A. Howell, professor of chemistry, 36-1/2 years, effective Jan. 1, 2001; Dr. Ahmad D. Issa, professor of finance and commercial law; 26-1/2 years, effective Dec. 31, 2002; Frank R. Jamison, professor of instructional media, 33 years, effective April 30, 2001; Beatrice Sichel, professor of libraries, 27-1/2 years, effective May 31, 2001; and Robert L. Whaley, professor of music, 35 years, effective Aug. 31, 2001.

The staff members retiring are: Michael J. Aloisio; system specialist, Advancement Services, 11 years, effective May 26, 2000; Lois Carl, secretary, Kercher Center for Social Research, 26 years, effective May 31, 2000; Mary Krohn, food worker, Davis Dining Service, 12 years, effective Aug. 31, 2000; Franklin McKenzie, operator, Power Plant, 23-1/2 years, effective Aug. 31, 2000; Carl D. Neff, operator, Power Plant, 26 years, effective May 31, 2000; Adelaida G. Nicholson, technician, Sindecuse Health Center, 22 years, effective June 16, 2000; Sandra Rice, secretary, military science, 13-1/2 years, effective May 31, 2000; Richard H. Wadsworth, operator, Power Plant, 24 years, effective Aug. 31, 2000; and James M. Whippo, operator, Power Plant, 24-1/2 years, effective June 30, 2000.

The faculty members resigning are: Judith M. Arnold, associate professor, Waldo Library, effective May 15, 2000; Dr. Scott H. Kollins, assistant professor of psychology, effective Aug. 11, 2000; Dr. Joanne Lasker, assistant professor of speech pathology and audiology, effective June 11, 2000; Dr. Thomas Legg, assistant professor of history, effective Aug. 6, 2000; Dr. Robert I. Moss, assistant professor of health, physical education and recreation, effect Aug. 15, 2000; Dr. Hung-Lian Tang, associate professor of business information systems, effective June 30, 2000; and Dr. Candis H. Warner, assistant professor of speech pathology and audiology, effect June 11, 2000.
