KALAMAZOO -- The WMU women's tennis team will try to earn its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance when it takes on Marshall University today (April 30) in the title match of the 2000 Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.
The title match begins at 1 p.m. at WMU's Sorensen Courts. The Broncos knocked off Bowling Green 4-0 on Saturday to advance. Marshall, the top seed in the postseason, defeated Miami 4-1 Saturday to earn a berth in the finals. WMU's lone loss during the regular season was a 4-3 setback at Marshall April 1 in Huntington, W.Va.
Western Michigan recorded wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles to give WMU a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The Broncos won at No. 1, 5, and 6 singles to knock off the Falcons.
Larissa Chinwah and Nikki Thompson won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles . At No. 2, Cyra Malik and Melanie Remynse won 8-2. Kendra Becker and Diana Dimitrescu trailed 5-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Chinwah knocked off the Falcons' Abby Bratton 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles while Dimitrescu was a 6-3, 6-2 victor over Devon Bissinger at No. 5. Becker recorded the match-clinching point by defeating Tracy Howitt 6-1, 6-3 in No. 6 singles.
