Women's track team takes second at Bronco Invitational

April 23, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- In a week that saw the Broncos engrossed in final exams, dormitory moves and battles with mother nature over track time, Western Michigan managed to take second place in a scored quadrangular held Saturday (April 22) at the Kanley Track & Field Complex. The Broncos scored 177 points to finish behind Central Michigan (222) and ahead of Bowling Green (140) and Michigan State (108).

Diane Russo's squad improved its outdoor dual mark to 5-3 and defeated the MSU Spartans for the third time in 2000 after recording two victories during the indoor campaign.

"Considering all that went on this week, I thought we performed well. We had a lot of PRs (personal records). I'm happy with the two wins, although we're not as deep as we should be because of injuries," said Russo.

Western Michigan won five events during its only home meet of the season. Angela Cole-Curry (Lansing, Mich.) clocked a season-best 12.14 to win the 100 meter dash while freshman Heather Johnson (Gary, Ind.) captured the 400 meter dash in 55.63.

Cole-Curry and Johnson also ran on the winning 4x400 relay squad (3:51.42) along with Justina Phillips (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Allison Langworthy (Holland, Mich.). Langworthy finished three seconds ahead of the field in the 800 meter run at 2:14.09.

Jennifer Schmidt (Lapeer, Mich.) won the javelin throw for the second straight week with a toss of 112 feet, 5 inches. She was one of seven WMU seniors competing at Kanley for the final time.

Sherita Williams of Michigan State finished as the meet's top scorer with 28.5 points, winning three individual events. Other notable performances were turned in by Central Michigan's Jennifer Brown, who bettered her Kanley record in the hammer throw by 11 feet at 184-00. Andrea Cook of Bowling Green matched the Kanley pole vault record by clearing 11 feet, 5.75 inches.

WMU will send split squads to the Drake Relays and Hillsdale Relays next week (April 28-29).
