Softball team earns doubleheader split with Oakland

April 13, 2000

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University softball team (6-20) earned a doubleheader split with Oakland (13-21) Wednesday afternoon at Ebert Field in non-conference action.

The Broncos, who gained their first home win of the season with a 6-0 victory in the opener, fell by a score of 5-0 in the night cap.

Junior third baseman Nicole Drabecki led the WMU offense against the Golden Grizzlies, finishing the day 4-for-5 with one RBI and a run scored in the afternoon's action.

The Bronco offensive attack, which has been struggling all season, jumped on Oakland early in the first game by scoring all of the team's runs in the first three innings of play. Unfortunately for WMU, the squad would not plate another runner the rest of the day.

With two out and a runner on in the bottom of the first, designated player Alison Honaman reached on an error and as a result Melissa Martens was able to score from second base. Drabecki followed with an RBI triple and WMU owned an early 2-0 lead.

In the second, the Broncos were once again able to take advantage of an Oakland miscue, this time scoring three runs in the frame. Outfielders Alaina Scott and Jen Myslinski both collected RBI base hits in the inning. WMU wrapped up the scoring in the third on an RBI single by freshman Angie Fiero.

Junior pitcher Nicky Kern picked up her first win of the year by throwing a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out four batters.

The Western Michigan fortunes turned in the second contest, as a revamped Bronco lineup was unable to continue the team's offensive success. Oakland claimed a 5-0 victory, out-hitting the home team by a 14-4 margin. Freshman pitcher Leah Seffernick took the loss for the Broncos.

The Golden Grizzlies scored in three of the first four innings and cruised to the win behind the arm of Julie Anderson. Six OU players had at least two hits, led by Linnea Utecht's 2-for-3, two RBI performance. The Broncos' Drabecki collected three of the squad's four base knocks.

WMU continues its homestand on Friday by hosting rival Eastern Michigan at 3 p.m. at Ebert Field in the team's next action.
