KALAMAZOO -- Jason Redenius, a senior captain on the Western Michigan University hockey team, has been named to the GTE Academic All-District IV At-Large First Team. As an all-district selection, Redenius will appear on the national ballot for Academic All-America voting, to be announced in April.
Redenius, an aviation flight science major from Muskegon, Mich., owns a 3.81 overall grade-point average which ranks him among the top 15 student-athletes at WMU. He received GTE all-district second team honors last year and was recently chosen to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic First Team.
Other academic honors earned by Redenius include the Robert E. Boughner Engineering Scholar-Athlete Award, the Peter R. Ellis Academic Award (twice) and CCHA All-Academic Honorable Mention in 1999. Jason is also a two-time nominee for The Humanitarian Award given to college hockey's finest citizen.
A former walk on, Redenius spent five seasons with the hockey program, totaling 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) in 106 games. He is a two-time recipient of the Catherine Lawson Sportsmanship Award and received the Ed Edwards Most Improved Player Award as a redshirt freshman in 1996.
He plans on becoming a commercial pilot after graduation.
