KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's hockey Broncos split a weekend series (March 3-4) with Ferris State to finish tied for ninth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
WMU completed the regular season with an overall record of 12-19-3 and tied Miami for ninth place with a conference record of 10-15-3. The Broncos enter the CCHA playoffs as the No. 10 seed and travel to No. 1 seeded Michigan for a best-of-three match series, March 10-12.
This is the Broncos first trip to the playoffs since 1997. They were swept (0-2) in their series with the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Feb. 11-12.
In action against nationally ranked No. 15 Ferris State, the Broncos won 4-2 at Ferris on Friday and lost 7-0 on Saturday in Kalamazoo. There were 2,114 fans on hand at Lawson Ice Arena for the Broncos' home finale of the 1999-2000 season.
Brent Rumble, Corey Waring, David Gove, and Mike Bishai scored all of Western Michigan's goals in the second period of Friday's 4-2 victory. The Broncos finished the regular season with 43 power-play goals, the most for WMU in four seasons.
