Wayland Patrick Smith, professor emeritus in management, died
Jan. 16 in Arizona. He was 73.
Smith retired in 1989 after serving for 14-1/2 years as a
faculty member in both management and mechanical engineering.
Before coming to WMU, he served as the dean of experimental colleges
and a professor of industrial engineering at the State University
of New York-Buffalo. He also taught at the University of Wisconsin,
Case Institute of Technology and Michigan State University.
In 1968-69, Smith was a Lucas Visiting Professor in the engineering
and production department at the University of Birmingham, England.
He was a National Science Foundation Teaching Faculty Fellow
in 1958-59.
He was a 1947 graduate of the University of Wisconsin and
earned his master's and doctoral degrees from the Case Institute
of Technology.
