KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University gymnastics team (5-3 overall, 3-1 MAC) claimed its third Mid-American Conference dual meet of the season with a 191.275-189.950 victory over Eastern Michigan Friday night (Feb. 11) at Warner Gymnasium. WMU was coming off a third-place finish at the Michigan Classic on Sunday (Feb. 6). EMU finished fifth at the same event.
The Broncos' third league win of the campaign marks the program's highest single-season total since the MAC began keeping conference-only results in 1995. Western Michigan has now claimed as many overall wins as it had all of last season (five).
Western Michigan used another strong performance in the balance beam to secure the victory. Senior Rachel Smith and junior Andrea Ruhe both posted scores of 9.800 and sophomore Sara Trudeau was right behind at 9.750. The lowest score the squad counted toward the team total was a 9.625 by Jennifer Gleissner.
The top-three all-around positions belonged to Bronco student-athletes. Smith posted a season-best total of 38.400 and Gleissner and Lori Gerhart both collected tallies of 38.275.
The Broncos will look to continue their MAC success at home on Feb. 20 against Ball State.
