KALAMAZOO -- Senior Tony Barksdale scored a career-high 35 points, but it wasn't enough as the WMU men's basketball team lost to Akron, 89-83, on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 5). The game was played in front of 1,602 fans at University Arena in Kalamazoo.
WMU trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, but battled back to a two-point deficit with less than eight minutes remaining in the game. That, however, was as close as the Broncos would get. WMU was out-scored, 36-23, at the free-throw line, which proved to be the difference in the contest.
In addition to Barksdale, Taylor Bro and Rod Brown scored in double figures against Akron. Bro had 13 points and eight rebounds. Brown had 15 points and three rebounds. Both fouled out near the end of the contest.
The Broncos are now 8-13 for all games and 4-8 in the Mid-American Conference. Akron, the leader in the MAC East Division, improved to 16-6 overall, 10-3 MAC. WMU has lost three in a row and four of its past five contests, all against MAC opponents. The Broncos are now two full games behind division co-leaders Ball State and Eastern Michigan in the MAC West. Ball State defeated EMU, 78-58, on Saturday, and both teams are 6-6 in the conference.
Western Michigan travels to Ball State on Wednesday, Feb. 9, and returns home on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 12, to host traditional rival Central Michigan.
Bronco men's basketball can be heard on the Bronco Radio Network (Flagship station WFAT-96.5 FM Kalamazoo), and via broadcast.com on the Bronco Web site <www.wmubroncos.com>.
