ITHICA, N.Y. -- WMU's hockey team was swept in a weekend series for the first time in the 1999-2000 season with losses at non-conference opponent Cornell in Ithica, N.Y. Cornell won, 4-3, on Friday (Jan. 14) and, 3-1, on Saturday (Jan. 15).
The Broncos fall to 8-10-2 overall and remain 7-7-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Cornell improved to 7-7-1 and is 4-4-0 in the East Coast Athletic Conference. WMU has never won (0-4) versus Cornell, having previously lost two matches during the 1997-98 season, one played on neutral ice, and the other on the Broncos' home ice at Lawson Arena.
In Friday night's contest, WMU received goals from Jeff Lukasak and Mike Bishai for a 2-0 led at the end of the first period. Cornell responded with four unanswered goals in the second and third periods and a 4-2 lead. Brent Rumble scored for WMU in the third period for the 4-3 final score.
David Gove scored the lone goal for Western Michigan in Saturday's 3-1 loss. It was Gove's team-leading 11th goal of the season.
WMU is in fourth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and returns to CCHA action next weekend. The Broncos travel to South Bend, Ind., for two contests at Notre Dame, Jan. 21 and 22, before returning home to host Michigan State, Jan. 28 and 29.
