KALAMAZOO -- The WMU hockey team (7-7-2, 6-6-2 CCHA) continues to follow big Friday night wins with disappointing Saturday losses. The Broncos romped in a 7-3 win over Ferris State on Friday (Dec. 3) at WMU and got stomped in a 6-0 shelling on Saturday at Ferris.
Saturday's loss was the first time this season that WMU was held without a goal. The Broncos, who lead the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in power-play goals, were 0-9 with the man advantage at Ferris. Jeff Reynaert made 34 saves in net for the Broncos. Ferris State had 40 shots on goal to only 19 for WMU.
For the fourth time this season and for the second consecutive weekend, the Broncos took the opening match in a two-game series and lost against the same opponent in Saturday's rematch.
Six different Broncos scored in Friday's seven-goal win. David Gove collected two, his seventh and eighth goals of the season. Reynaert (7-5-2) was also in net for the Broncos on Friday night and made 19 saves. There were 2,291 fans at Lawson Arena for Friday's contest, which was played opposite the football Broncos' appearance on national TV in the MAC Championship game.
Ferris State is 11-7-0 overall, 7-7-0 CCHA following the series split with the Broncos. WMU remains in fourth place in the CCHA standings and in the thick of the competition for home ice in the CCHA playoffs in March.
The Broncos are idle for an entire month, until Jan. 7 and 8, when they host Alaska-Fairbanks at Lawson Ice Arena. Faceoff for both contests is 7:05 p.m.
