Volleyball Broncos suffer first MAC loss

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University volleyball team saw its 13-match winning streak came to an end with a loss to Akron in front of 2,082 fans at University Arena.

The Broncos fell 3-1 (7-15, 13-15, 15-13, 10-15) to the Zips in front of a season-high 2,082 fans at University Arena on Friday (Nov. 5).

Western Michigan's overall record fell to 21-4 while its Mid-American Conference mark now stands at 13-1. Akron improved to 13-12 overall, 8-4 in the league. In other conference action Friday, Ball State posted a 3-0 win at Marshall to improve to 20-5 overall, 12-1 in the MAC. Miami, WMU's opponent Saturday, lost 3-0 at Eastern Michigan. The RedHawks are now 13-10 overall, 8-5 in the conference.

Senior Traci Morin recorded a season-high 23 kills, nine digs, eight blocks, and a .378 hitting percentage. Jen Nowak, Mandy Whitfield, and Monyka Paul each posted double-double performances. Nowak had 69 assists and a career-high 18 digs in the loss. Whitfield also established a career best in digs with 24 and registered 17 kills. Paul posted 13 kills and 10 digs.

The loss wasted a great night by sophomore middle blocker Zakiya Pope, who recorded 11 kills and a .471 attack rate.

The Broncos hit .237 as a team, their second-lowest mark in conference matches this season. Western Michigan was outblocked 15-13 by the Zips and committed 11 service errors.

WMU hosts Miami on Saturday (Nov. 6) at 7 p.m. at University Arena. Western Michigan can wrap up a home match in the MAC Tournament Nov. 23 with a win Saturday against Miami.

Bronco seniors Traci Morin and Mandy Whitfield will be honored following Saturday's match against Miami, which marks their final regular-season home contests.

The 1999 MAC Tournament begins Nov. 23 at campus sites. The semifinals and finals will be held Nov. 26 and 27, respectively, at the highest-seeded team still remaining. The top eight teams in the MAC qualify for the tournament, with the top four hosting first-round matches.
