OXFORD, Ohio -- The Western Michigan University volleyball team (17-3 overall, 9-0 MAC) remained the lone undefeated team in the Mid-American Conference with a 3-1 victory at Miami on Wednesday (Oct. 20).
The Broncos lost game one, 15-17, but rallied (15-12, 15-4, 15-9) to take the match in four games. At the midpoint of their 18-match MAC schedule, the Broncos have won 27 of 29 games played, sweeping (3-0) seven of their first nine conference opponents. WMU also lost game one of their Sept. 24 match with Bowling Green and rallied for a 3-1 win.
WMU has now gone 20 matches without going to a five-game set, the longest such streak since 1986.
Traci Morin led five Broncos with double figures in kills. Morin had 21 kills, Mandy Whitfield had 19, Zakiya Pope had 13, Alberta Griffin had 11, and Monyka Paul added 10.
Morin, a senior from Bay City, Mich., was no. 1 in the MAC and no. 7 in the nation in hitting percentage going into the contest. She improved her season average by hitting .447 against Miami.
Junior setter Jen Nowak assisted her teammates 68 times for an impressive 17.0 assists-per-game average. Nowak is one of the top two setters in the conference in assists per game. She also had 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Mandy Whitfield recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 15 digs. Junior Kelly Kuharski, who suffered a season-ending knee injury one year ago, added 14 digs and now needs just seven to reach 500 digs for her three-year career.
Miami, the defending MAC champions, dropped to 5-4 in the conference. It was the fourth straight loss for the Redhawks following a 5-0 start on the conference schedule. The Broncos will meet the Redhawks again on Saturday, Nov. 6, at WMU's University Arena.
The Broncos play two matches at home this weekend. WMU hosts Marshall (12-7, 6-2) Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. and welcomes Ohio (6-14, 0-8) to University Arena on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m.
