Football Broncos roll over CMU before record crowd

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University's football team rolled to a 38-16 victory over arch-rival Central Michigan before a MAC-record crowd of 36,102 at Waldo Stadium.

With the win, WMU is 3-2 overall, 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Central Michigan fell to 1-4, 0-2 MAC. Saturday night's contest was the 71st in the rivalry. CMU won six of the 10 meetings between the two schools during the 1990s.

For the second time in two home games this season, WMU set a new school and conference attendance record. Total attendance for the two games was 71,976.

The Broncos led 21-3 at halftime. Central narrowed the margin to 31-16 in the fourth quarter, but the Broncos responded with a late touchdown to seal the win.

Corey Alston caught two TD passes in the win over CMU. Quarterback Tim Lester completed 22 of 39 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns. Lester, who set the WMU record with 22 TD passes in 1998, has already thrown for 17 touchdowns in five games this season. He has 70 TD passes in his career.
