Football Broncos win tough MAC opener at NIU

DEKALB, Ill. -- Brad Selent kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to lift Western Michigan University (2-2. 1-0) to a 24-21 victory over a determined Northern Illinois team. The game, played at NIU in front of 19, 213 fans, was the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools.

Western led 14-7 at the half and 21-7 after three quarters, but the NIU Huskies mounted a fourth-quarter comeback on long scoring drives of 80 and 60 yards to tie the game. Selent kicked a game-winning field goal for WMU for the third time in the past two seasons.

Bronco quarterback Tim Lester completed 16 of 34 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
