Whitfield is MAC volleyball offensive player of the week

Sept. 22, 1999

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University senior Mandy Whitfield (Comstock, Mich.) was tabbed as Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 20).

The MAC Player of the Week award is the first such honor for Whitfield, who transferred to Western Michigan from Kansas State in 1997.

Last week Whitfield powered the Broncos to a 3-1 record and second-place finish in the Ameritech Invitational tournament Friday and Saturday (Sept. 17-18) at University Arena. Whitfield hit .369 with a team-high 67 kills (5.15 kpg.) and 46 digs (3.54 dpg.) in the Broncos' four tourney matches. She hit a career-best .500 (18-3-30) against DePaul on Friday. She hit .389 with a match-high 18 kills in the Broncos' 3-0 loss to Michigan State in the tournament title match Saturday night.

On the year, Whitfield has blasted 136 kills (3.89 kpg.) to pace Western Michigan. She recorded career dig No. 500 against Illinois-Chicago Sept. 11 and is just 75 kills shy of the 1,000-kill milestone for her career.

Whitfield and the Broncos (8-3) open Mid-American Conference play on Friday (Sept. 24) when they host Ball State at 7 p.m. at University Arena. WMU welcomes Bowling Green to town on Saturday (Sept. 25). That match also begins at 7 p.m.
