Volleyball Broncos even record with win over Iowa

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The WMU Broncos rebounded from losses to top-10 ranked Nebraska and Florida with an impressive 3-1 victory over the University of Iowa today (Sept. 5) at the Florida Sun Trust Invitational in Gainesville. WMU's season record is 2-2.

Game scores for WMU were 15-9. 15-6, 7-15 and 15-5.

Senior Mandy Whitfield had 11 kills versus Iowa. Whitfield also had 11 against Florida and eight versus Nebraska for a three-match average of 10 kills per match at the Sun Trust Invitational. The Broncos' only other senior, middle blocker Traci Morin, posted equally impressive statistics with seven kills, four digs, and seven blocks against Iowa. For the three tournament matches, Morin totaled 22 kills, second only to Whitfield for WMU.

Against the Iowa Hawkeyes, sophomore outside hitter M'Myia McQuirter was impressive with 10 kills and a .529 attack percentage. Junior Monyka Paul hit .375 and had eight kills. Paul also had eight kills versus Nebraska. Middle Zakiya Pope, who had seven kills versus Florida, added six against the Hawkeyes. Junior defensive specialist Kelly Kuharski led all players with 10 digs versus Iowa.

Junior setter Jen Nowak had six kills, seven digs and 37 assists against the Hawkeyes. For the three-match invitational, Nowak totaled 92 assists and was named to the all-tournament team.

Nebraska defeated Florida, 3-1, for the tournament championship. WMU finished third at the Sun Trust Invitational.

The Broncos opened the 1999 season with a 3-0 win at Jacksonville University on Sept. 2.

WMU hosts the Bronco SpikeTacular tournament next weekend, Sept. 10-11, beginning with a 7 p.m. Friday match versus Central Connecticut University.
