Volleyball Broncos fall to top-10 ranked Nebraska and Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Western Michigan University volleyball team lost to top-10 ranked Nebraska and Florida today (Sept. 4) at the Sun Trust Invitational. The No. 3-ranked Nebraska Cornhusters swept their 10 a.m. match by scores of 15-3, 15-7, 15-13, while the No. 8-ranked Florida Gators won 3-0 in a 4 p.m. contest with game scores of 15-7, 16-14 and 15-8.

In the match against Nebraska, outside hitters Mandy Whitfield and Monyka Paul led the Broncos with eight kills apiece. Whitfield and defensive specialist Kelly Kuharski led the team with nine digs each. Senior middle blocker Traci Morin added seven kills, seven digs and had four block assists. Setter Jen Nowak had 22 assists for the match and contributed four digs. Middle blocker Zakiya Pope had five kills.

In the afternoon match versus Florida, Whitfield had 11 kills and six digs, Morin had eight kills and a .364 attack percentage. Sophomore Pope had seven kills and hit .389. Nowak had nine digs and served up 31 assists in the three-game contest.

WMU continues play at the Sun Trust Invitational with an 11:30 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 5) match versus the University of Iowa.

With today's losses, the Broncos' record stands at 1-2. WMU opened the 1999 season with a 3-0 win at Jacksonville University on Sept. 2.
