Marketing students recognized for achievements

KALAMAZOO -- Forty students were recently honored for outstanding achievement in a number of areas by the Department of Marketing at Western Michigan University.

Those students being honored for Outstanding Academic Achievement are seniors who have completed at least 96 credit hours, including 15 hours of marketing, with an overall grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

The Department of Marketing, which offers majors in marketing, advertising and promotion, food marketing, and sales and business marketing, is part of WMU's Haworth College of Business, whose graduate and undergraduate programs are fully accredited by AACSB, the International Association for Management Education.

ANN ARBOR -- Aaron Dersnah, 3532 Terhune, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1988 graduate of Huron High School, he is the son of Donald and Patricia Dersnah. He received a master's of business administration degree from WMU in April.

BATTLE CREEK -- Kelly Wahl, 345 N. McKinley Ave, received the Outstanding Marketing MBA Student award. He also received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Wahl graduated with a master's of business administration degree in December.

Sara Briggs, 115 Grand Castle Terrace, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1994 graduate of Harper Creek High School, she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in food marketing.

BENTON HARBOR -- Jennifer Chaney, 2290 E. Napier, was a member of the team that earned first place in the district and fifth place nationally in the Promotional Products Association Collegiate Competition. A 1994 graduate of Benton Harbor High School, she received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in December.

BYRON CENTER -- Jennifer Walburg, 2021 87th St. S.W., received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of South Christian High School, she received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in June.

CADILLAC -- Elizabeth DeBoer received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1990 graduate of Cadillac Senior High School, she is pursuing a master's of business administration degree.

CALEDONIA -- Wendy Faber, 9300 76 South East, Alto, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Caledonia High School, she received a bachelor's degree in marketing in April.

CANTON -- Troy Smith, 47934 Wadebridge Court, was a member of the team that took first place in the district and fifth place nationally in the Promotional Products Association Collegiate Competition. He received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in December.

CLARKSTON -- Kristy Swartout, 6690 Goldfinch, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1994 graduate of Clarkston High School, she is the daughter of Richard and Joan Swartout. She is pursuing bachelor's degrees in advertising and promotion, and creative writing.

CLIMAX -- Emily L. Hayward, 11837 Lee Mar Drive received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1994 graduate of Climax-Scotts High School, she is the daughter of George and Eleanor Hayward of Vicksburg. She received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in April.

FARMINGTON -- Steven Dilland, 30030 Westgate Road, received the Outstanding Student Award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards of State Universities and was named the Presidential Scholar in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. A 1995 graduate of Harrison High School, he is pursing bachelor's degrees in marketing and recreation.

FRANKENMUTH -- Shelby Schiefer received an award for Outstanding Sales Presentation and an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. She is a 1994 graduate of Frankenmuth High School and received a bachelor's degree in marketing in December.

GARDEN CITY -- Dean Allen, 270 N. Venoy Circle, received an award for Outstanding Sales Presentation. A 1995 graduate of Garden City High School, he is the son of Gary and Linda Allen. He is pursuing a bachelor's degree in food marketing.

JENISON -- Heidi Haskins, 7573 Magnolia Drive, was named the Presidential Scholar in the Department of Marketing. Haskins also received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement and was a member of a team that took first place in the district and fifth place nationally in the Promotional Products Association Collegiate Competition. A 1995 graduate of Jenison High School, she received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in April. She is the daughter of Mark and Linda Haskins.

Erin Klooster, 8240 Birchwood Drive, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Jenison High School, she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion.

KALAMAZOO -- Raymond Clark was honored as a member of a team that took first place in the district and third place nationally in the Promotional Products Association Collegiate Competition. A 1993 graduate of Portage Central High School, he is the son of Robert Clark of Bel Air, Md., and Janet Fowle of Battle Creek. He received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in April.

Matthew Kangas, 4789 Landingway Drive, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. He received a master's of business administration degree in April.

Brett Poole, 8953 West H Ave., Kalamazoo, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. He received a master's of business administration degree in April.

KENTWOOD -- Jenifer Kaiser, 5533 Springwood Court S.E,, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of East Kentwood High School, she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in marketing.

LAINGSBURG -- Angela Behrenbrinker, 6957 Westgate Drive, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Laingsburg High School, she received a bachelor's degree in April.

LANSING -- Carrie Rochowiak, 2916 Mayfair Dr., received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Eastern High School, she received a bachelor's degree in marketing in April.

LIVONIA -- Laura Sawicki, 36499 Grove, was honored as a member of the team that took first place in the district and third place nationally in the Promotional Products Association Collegiate Competition. A 1995 graduate of Stevenson High School, she is the daughter of Richard and Judy Sawicki. She is pursuing a bachelor's degree in marketing.

MACOMB COUNTY -- Jessica Jones, 47100 Savannah, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township, she is the daughter of Joseph and Janice Jones. She received a bachelor's degree in food marketing in April.

MANCHESTER -- Mary Lobbestael, 10730 Clinton Rd., was named the Outstanding Advertising and Promotion Student and received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. She was also a member of the team that took first place in the district and third place nationally in the Promotional Products Association Collegiate Competition and she placed third in the Better Business Bureau of Detroit/James P. Hoppin Student Award Competition on Self-Regulation in Advertising. A 1995 graduate of Manchester High School, she is the daughter of John and Lynda Lobbestael. She received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in April.

MARYSVILLE -- Lisa Bonner, 1018 Virginia Ave., received the Outstanding Marketing Student award from the American Marketing Association of West Michigan and received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. She received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in April.

MIDLAND -- Kimberly Heffel, 5411 Wallbridge, was named the Outstanding Marketing Student. She also received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of H.H. Dow High School, she is the daughter of James and Nancy Heffel. She is pursuing bachelor's degrees in marketing and Spanish.

MUSKEGON -- Sara Fisher-Mack, 1665 Ada, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. She graduated in December with a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion.

NORTON SHORES -- Cheryl Ellis, 1080 Harbor Point Court, received an award for OutstandinAcademic Achievement. A 1994 graduate of Mona Shores High School, she received a bachelor's degree in food marketing in December.

OKEMOS -- Dean Seales, 3815 Binghampton, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Okemos High School, he is pursuing a bachelor's degree in marketing.

PORT HURON -- Julie Webb received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Port Huron Northern High School, she is the daughter of Charles Webb of Fort Gratiot, and the late Marilyn K. Webb. She received a bachelor's degree in June.

RICHLAND -- Martha Pacheco was recognized as the marketing senior with the highest grade point average. She also received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1974 graduate of Richland High School, she received bachelor's degrees in advertising and promotion, and Spanish in April.

ST. CLAIR SHORES -- Lisa Ewald, 25501 San Rosa, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Regina High School, she received a bachelor's degree in food marketing in June.

ST. JOHNS -- Chad Simon, 1301 S. Oakland, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. He received a bachelor's degree in marketing in April.

SPARTA -- Aleta Chase received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Sparta High School, she received a bachelor's degree in food in April.

STERLING HEIGHTS -- Linda McClintock, 14462 Debbie Drive, was a member of the team that took first place in the district and fifth place nationally in the Promotional Products Association Collegiate Competition. McClintock, a 1994 graduate of Henry Ford II High School, received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in April.

TRENTON -- Joyce Zukow, 2527 Boxford St., received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. She received a bachelor's degree in marketing in December.

TROY -- Amanda Wartchow, 3804 Victoria Court, received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Athens High School, she received a bachelor's degree in advertising and promotion in June.

UNION CITY -- Alesha Sands received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1994 graduate of Union City High School, she is the daughter of David Sands of Aspen, Colo., and Debra Wilder of Battle Creek. She is pursuing a bachelor's degree in marketing.

VERMONTVILLE -- Dana Hasselback, 7550 Brick Highway, was named the Outstanding Food Marketing Student. She also received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. A 1995 graduate of Maple Valley High School, she is the daughter of Kelly and Joan Hasselback. She received a bachelor's degree in food marketing in April.

WATERFORD -- Carmen Campbell was honored as a member of the team that took first place in the district and third place nationally in the Promotional Products Association Collegiate Competition. A 1994 graduate of Waterford High School, she is the daughter of Robert Campbell, of Milford, and Judith Kaines of Clarkston. She received a bachelor's degree in marketing in April.
