KALAMAZOO -- The 1999 Mike Gary Athletic Fund Drive for Western Michigan University has raised $593,100 in pledges, surpassing the campaign goal of $548,000 by 8 percent and marking a 13.4 percent increase from a year ago. This year's total is also a record high for the fund drive.
Approximately 40 volunteers solicited phone contributions from April 19 through May 14. Jerry Meinzinger, retired Pharmacia & UpJohn Inc. executive, chaired the campaign and was assisted by chair-elect Larry Lueth of the National City Corporation who will oversee the operation next year.
"The Funds' success is an indication of what is happening at WMU overall," says Jerry George, Bronco Athletic Development Director. "It starts under the leadership of President Elson Floyd and Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard and is a reflection of the coaches and athletes. Much credit goes to the hard work of the volunteers."
Although the volunteer portion of the Gary Fund drive is completed, gifts and pledges will be accepted through June 30, creating the possibility of $600,000 in contributions. Persons interested in donating should contact George at (616) 387-3057.
The Gary Fund was founded in 1956 and is a source of revenue for WMU's 20 varsity sports. Proceeds are used in providing scholarships, travel support and equipment needs.
