December 17, 1998

LANSING, Mich. -- Gov. John Engler announced today that Keith A. Pretty, vice president for external affairs and general counsel at Western Michigan University, has accepted a post in his new administration. Pretty will head a new Michigan project designed to prepare the state's workforce for the 21st century.

"I congratulate Keith on this appointment. This will be an excellent forum for him to continue his service to the state," said WMU President Elson S. Floyd after the governor's announcement. "I also would like to thank him for his many contributions to the University."

Pretty, 1973 graduate of WMU and a 1978 graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, joined the University staff in 1987 as general counsel and vice president for legislative affairs. He came to WMU after serving for seven years as a lobbyist for Amoco Corp. in Washington, D.C. Pretty was appointed vice president for external affairs in 1992. His areas of responsibility included legal affairs; legislative relations; collective bargaining; development; alumni relations; and marketing, public relations and communications.

The organizational matters surrounding Pretty's departure will be addressed over the next few weeks, Floyd said. Decisions on those matters will be announced, both internally and externally, at a later date.
