KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan University volleyball team kept its hopes of hosting a postseason Mid-American Conference tournament match alive with a 3-0 (15-9, 15-3, 15-9) win over rival Central Michigan on Friday (Nov. 13) at University Arena.
The Broncos improved to 18-10 overall, 10-5 in the MAC. Central fell to 10-14 overall, 7-9 in the conference. Western swept the season series with the Chippewas. WMU won 3-0 (15-3, 15-8, 15-13) in Mount Pleasant Sept. 30. Friday's match drew 726 fans to University Arena, the second-largest home crowd of the year. Western drew 774 fans for its match against Eastern Michigan Oct. 7.
Senior Stefanie Rotunno notched 13 kills to lead all players. She is now 25 kills shy of second place on Western's all-time kills list. Rotunno also hit .440, dug 12 balls, and drilled five service aces. The Broncos also got big nights from Mandy Whitfield, Traci Morin, and Andrea Cole. Whitfield had 11 kills, eight digs, and hit .333. Morin had nine kills and hit .571, her best performance of late. Cole continued her hot streak. The senior middle blocker had eight kills, six block assists, and posted a lofty .583 hitting percentage. As a team, Western hit .385 (49-12-96), its third-best attack rate this season.
Western plays its final regular season home match of the year Saturday (Nov. 14) when it hosts Ball State at 8 p.m. at University Arena.
WMU closes out the regular season at Kent State Nov. 20 and at Bowling Green Nov. 21.
