Broncos host Ohio for Southwest Fest

September 23, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- Coming off two disappointing loses on the road, the football Broncos return to Waldo Stadium this Saturday (Sept. 26) to host Ohio in a key Mid-American Conference matchup. The games begins at 6:30 p.m.

"Southwest Fest" is the theme for the game. The annual Southwest Fest has grown in tailgate participation and attendance to nearly the same record size of CommUniverCity Night. Hyames Field, the WMU baseball field, is transformed to "Southwest Valley" for corporate and community tailgate parties at this special event.

WMU set a Mid-American Conference attendance record on Sept. 3 when 35,107 fans turned out to watch the Broncos defeat Northern Illinois, 37-23, at CommUniverCity Night. Southwest Fest is the second home contest of the season, and another capacity crowd is expected.

The Bronco football team dropped a 35-7 decision at Toledo on Sept. 19. Tim Lester completed 24 of 41 passes for 310 yards. Corey Alston had a 63-yard touchdown reception and Mike Hutchings caught six passes for 74 yards. Robert Sanford had eight rushes for 61 yards. Reggie Thompson and Garrett Soldano had nine tackles each while Dan Falcon had eight tackles including four for negative yardage.

Following the opening season win against Northern Illinois, the Broncos lost, 45-30, at Indiana. For the season, WMU is 1-2 overall, 1-1 in MAC contests, 0-2 on the road, and 1-0 at home.
