Volleyball Broncos host WMU Invitational, Sept. 18-19

KALAMAZOO-- The Broncos host the WMU Invitational volleyball tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18-19. The Broncos play Iowa State at 7 p.m. on Friday with Western Illinois (noon) and West Virginia (7 p.m.) on the Saturday docket.

The Broncos split matches in this past weekend's (Sept. 11-12) Wildcat Classic tournament at the University of Arizona in Tucson. WMU lost to Arizona and Idaho before defeating Portland State and Massachusetts . The Broncos (5-4, 0-0) will carry a two-match win streak into this weekend's competition.

Junior Mandy Whitfield was named to the all-tournament team at Arizona. Whitfield registered 27 kills in 13 games, including a season high 14 kills in WMU's victory against U. Mass.

Coach Cathy George says the Broncos are ready to contend for a Mid-American Conference Championship. Stefanie Rotunno, Traci Morin and Monyka Paul all won various MAC honors last year and return for the 1998 campaign.

The Western Michigan University volleyball program boasts one of the greatest NCAA Division I traditions in the nation. From 1982 to 1989, the Broncos won 98 consecutive matches in Mid-American Conference play. That win streak established an NCAA Division I record for consecutive conference wins that stands to this day.

In 1983, the Broncos went through the regular season undefeated and set an NCAA single-match attendance record of 8,543 against Nebraska in the NCAA tournament.

WMU made eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 1982-1989, finishing fifth in 1983 and making the regionals in 1984, 1986 and 1987.
