Broncos earn MAC men's all-sports trophy

June 2, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- WMU has captured a share of the 1997-98 Reese Trophy, which recognizes men's all-sports supremacy in the Mid-American Conference.

The Broncos and Ball State University each compiled 58-1/2 points to lead 10 other institutions. WMU's top finishes were a share of the men's basketball championship, a second in tennis and thirds in cross country and indoor track.

"This is a goal that we've talked about at great length, and we've been laying the groundwork for this over the last three years," said Kathy B. Beauregard, athletic director. "Congratulations go to our student athletes, our coaches and our athletic administration."

The Reese Trophy was initiated in 1958 and is awarded to the MAC university with the six highest finishes in the 11 men's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. WMU's previous first places were recorded in 1962 and 1981.
