KALAMAZOO -- Members of the campus and local communities can "see the world" in a single evening during Western Michigan University's ninth annual International Festival Sunday, March 22.
The event will be from 4 to 8 p.m. in the East Ballroom of the Bernhard Center. It will feature food, performances and displays from more than 20 countries on five continents. Many of WMU's international students will attend, dressed in traditional costumes and serving authentic ethnic foods.
Admission is free and food will be sold for a nominal fee.
"International Festival promises to be a great opportunity for campus and community members to come together and learn about the diversity of cultures here at WMU," said Amy Conger, admissions and program specialist in the Office of International Student Services.
This year's festival is being organized by the International Programming Club and the Campus Activities Board with funds from the Student Assessment Fee. Sponsors include the offices of international student services, student life and the president, the Division of Student Affairs, the Cultural Events Committee, the Graduate Student Advisory Committee and WFAT radio.
The festival concludes a week-long celebration of international culture that gets under way with a panel discussion on Africa at 4 p.m. Friday, March 13, in Room 204 of the Bernhard Center. A Reggae Ball is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, March 14, in the Bernhard Center's South Ballroom. Both events are sponsored by the African Student Association.
The Pakistan Student Association will present a Dawat dinner at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Wesley Foundation. Sessions about WMU study abroad programs will take place in several campus locations beginning Monday, March 16. A program on Malaysia will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the Lee Honors College lounge.
